- Fame. The PR department has a field day with the SuperStar winners. Which scares me, considering that I'll be famous for whatever acceptance speech I fumble. I missed the public speaking classes in college.
- Fortune. No idea how much of a fortune, but any fortune is good fortune when it comes to bonuses.
- Food. Gala awards dinner and stuff. With the other winners, and the execs, including Jerry and Filo. In a monkey suit, as this is a "semi formal" affaire. My Sunday best looks awful lot like my Monday best, which is usually shorts and a polo. Doh.
- Bragging rights on the resume. Okay, this doesn't suck. This award is given to approximately a dozen or so individuals, plus one team, a year. Our head count is at approximately 15,000 people.
- Fancy leather notebook cover embossed with the "super star" logo, and a Yahoo! branded pen inside.
- Surprise party. At what you thought was a last minute ops announcement. The kind of surprise that puts your mug shot up as the first slide on the powerpoint deck. My rough oratory skills were noted when I responded to seeing that. Those of you who were there.. thank you.. Even the conspirators.
A couple months ago, EngineYard poked me. Well, actually, Tom Mornini did, about EngineYard. Tom gave me my original break into this industry. As to the poking, this wasn't the first poke - but the company is now more mature, profitable, and growing like crazy. They reached the point where I could take the financial risk to join them, and once again work with that employer. I wasn't really looking for outside jobs, but this was a rare opportunity to work with Tom again.
Unfortunately, after spending a week there, I've come to the conclusion (more of a concussion) that the fit isn't quite right for me. The big Why? After spending a small bit of time at EngineYard, I wasn't comfortable with fit. This is not a reflection of EngineYard, but more a matter of spending time there that an interview alone doesn't really cover. I also found that going from guru to f.n.g. overnight is a bit of a shock - one that I'm not entirely ready to get over yet.
As such, I'm heading back to the big Y!. They are gracious enough to have me back (Thank you Adam, Raj, and David).
For those of you keeping score, I've turned down the big G, and the local startup, and have decided to stay at Yahoo. However, I'm going to change positions, moving out of the production engineering position within web search, and move into the network engineering team. My initial duties will be centered around being the DNS architect, and also looking to help the neteng team scale better.
On a related note, the production engeering team is hiring. We're going on a hiring spree, in fact. We're looking for well rounded people who are experienced in system administration (Linux is a plus, but.. not 100% required), perl programming, application debugging, and network debugging. The team is responsible for operating tens of thousands of machines, automating and providing scalable solutions, managing the applications in the production environment, and participating with development teams to promote scalable and supportable products. If you'd like a formal job description, or you want to talk about the position, mail me, jfesler @ gigo.com .

I'm playing with flickr. It has some rough edges, but does seem to be an adequate gallery system. Downside? Max of 1 gig per month upload for *paid* accounts, which makes converting to it wholesale a lot tougher (it'll take me 6 months!)
All the major metro areas on Yahoo Maps now have an option to show traffic speeds on the highways. This almost makes up for the view I had at Inktomi where I could see the bridge traffic from my window..
